Caged Animals

As Hitler and the Nazi party began to blame the Jews for all the evils of world, the general public began to agree with this notion. Soon the Jewish population would become outcasts in society. Although there was no direct initiative to segregate the Jews, by 1939, many cities throughout Europe, specifically Poland and Germany, were concentrating Jews to one part of the city, where they would lived in fenced in and had to obey certain laws about when they could leave the area and so on. Most governments refused to recognize these establishments as "ghettos" but instead as the Jewish residential quarter to shed their horrific acts in a positive light. No term can justify how horrendous the facilities were for these people. Surrounded by brick walls and barbed wire, these communities were more like cages that are meant to house dangerous animals not human beings. They were unsanitary, unhealthy, and just unfit for living. Nelly Cesana recounts her ghetto experience. "I remember the fear, of never feeling safe. You had to hide constantly. And the hunger -- I would sit in our apartment and look out the window, and I would see the Polish children across the street bringing milk back home. It was like watching people in a storybook -- we had no food, no milk" (Lee). Like Cesana, many people in the ghettos starved as there was little food to be found. It was a life no one wanted to live.
For most people, life in the Nazi ghettos is unfathomable because of the inhumanity of the situation. The Nazis were afraid of the Jews so naturally they intentionally caged them up and left them to die. Through this act, the Nazis demoralized all the Jews making them feel worthless and that there was no reason for the existence. To Hitler and his Nazi party, the Jews were just a giant bug on the windshield of life that must be squashed immediately.
